A search for radio pulsars around low-mass white dwarfs
نویسندگان
چکیده
Low-mass white dwarfs can either be produced in low-mass X-ray binaries by stable mass transfer to a neutron star, or in a common-envelope phase with a heavier white dwarf companion. We have searched 8 low-mass white dwarf candidates recently identified in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey for radio pulsations from pulsar companions, using the Green Bank Telescope at 340MHz. We have found no pulsations down to flux densities of 0.6–0.8 mJy kpc and conclude that a given low-mass helium-core white dwarf has a probability of < 0.18±0.05 of being in a binary with a radio pulsar.

A Radio Search for Pulsar Companions to Sdss Low-mass White Dwarfs
We have conducted a search for pulsar companions to 15 low-mass white dwarfs (LMWDs; M < 0.4 M⊙) at 820 MHz with the NRAO Green Bank Telescope (GBT). These LMWDs were spectroscopically identified in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS), and do not show the photometric excess or spectroscopic signature associated with a companion in their discovery data. However, LMWDs are believed to evolve in b...
متن کاملOn a Theoretical Interpretation of the Period Gap in Binary Millisecond Pulsars
We reexamine evolutionary channels for the formation of binary millisecond pulsars in order to understand their observed orbital period distribution. The available paths provide a natural division into systems characterized by long orbital periods (∼> 60 days) and short orbital periods (∼< 30 days). Systems with initial periods ∼ 1− 2 days, mainly driven by the loss of orbital angular momentum,...
متن کاملLow Luminosity Companions to White Dwarfs
This paper presents results of a near-infrared imaging survey for low mass stellar and substellar companions to white dwarfs. A wide field proper motion survey of 261 white dwarfs was capable of directly detecting companions at orbital separations between ∼ 100 and 5000 AU with masses as low as 0.05 M⊙, while a deep near field search of 86 white dwarfs was capable of directly detecting companio...
متن کاملThe DODO Survey II: A Gemini Direct Imaging Search for Substellar and Planetary Mass Companions around Nearby Equatorial and Northern Hemisphere White Dwarfs
The aim of the Degenerate Objects around Degenerate Objects (DODO) survey is to search for very low mass brown dwarfs and extrasolar planets in wide orbits around white dwarfs via direct imaging. The direct detection of such companions would allow the spectroscopic investigation of objects with temperatures much lower (< 500 K) than the coolest brown dwarfs currently observed. These ultra–low m...
متن کاملThe possible companions of young radio pulsars
We discuss the formation of pulsars with massive companions in eccentric orbits. We demonstrate that the probability for a non-recycled radio pulsar to have a white dwarf as a companion is comparable to that of having an old neutron star as a companion. Special emphasis is given to PSR B1820–11 and PSR B2303+46. Based on population synthesis calculations we argue that PSR B1820–11 and PSR B2303...
